Home Modifications to make life better for the Neuro-Spicy:-)

HMOTA’s Home Mod Metrics Program for Autism is a program developed by occupational therapists that specialize in autism. This program is based on research and begins with an assessment of the person with autism’s sensory needs, behavioral issues, and functional abilities.

Research shows:

  • Aggression is an issue many families are dealing with.
  • Self-harm is an issue for many people with autism.
  • Mental health emergencies happen more often with people with autism then the general population.
  • Emergency department can be dysregulating.
  • Families were provided strategies by professional.  Ignoring behaviors didn’t work.
  • Most emergency room visits during weekends & school holidays.

Behavioral research:

  • Parent’s noticed decline in behavior, but did not receive help and went into crisis.
  • It’s important to prevent escalation before it turns into crisis.
  • Parents have difficulty coping with behaviors.
  • Parents felt uncomfortable using the ER, challenging for the child.

Research demonstrates: Sensory rooms reduce emergency room visits and family crisis.
