I recently asked for wheelchair accessible house plans because I have 2 new builds coming up and we are at square one for the designs. Thank you to everyone who sent in wheelchair accessible house plans. Several people sent me accessible house plans and several sent house plans that could easily be made accessible.
Here are the some of the plans I submitted to my clients who we will be meeting with tomorrow to go over. I can’t post all of the plans I submitted because I don’t have permission.
It wasn’t really fair because I didn’t state exactly what the parameters were for the houses, so here they are:
- Open floor plan of course.
- Minimum 2 bathrooms, one has to be fully wheelchair accessible the others not so much but it would be nice.
- 3-bedrooms.
- As few hallways as possible but if there are hallways they should be a minimum of 4′ wide preferable 5′ wide especially if there is a doorway to turn into.
- No stairs, or steps if it can be avoided. Zero-step entries are preferred and can be built into any plan.
- All turn radius’ need to be a minimum of 5′ in diameter, it is too hard to maneuver a wheelchair in a small space.
- Garages need to be a minimum of 2 1/2 stalls to accommodate a wheelchair lift.
It’s difficult to be too specific with the parameters without going into too much detail, and as anyone who works with accessibility knows different features are required depending on the impairment.
I will be meeting with one set of clients tomorrow and have submitted the following designs to them. I’ll let you know their choices.
